About Us/Submissions

Di Mezzo Il Mare is a new online journal of literature and art associated with Wellness and Writing Retreats in Italy, a group of retreats held each summer in Umbria and Tuscany.

We love writers and artists who love to travel. This type of person often carries a notebook with them.

Our primary intent is to show the life of the unique handwritten page.
We also publish excellent literature and artwork.

Since we are located in the United States and Italy, we would like
to showcase the best of both worlds in each language.

Journal snapshot images may be of materials considered to be drafts,
sketches, or fragments, yet for our purpose they are also considered finished products.

We consider submissions of:

  • journal snapshots
  • poetry
  • short prose
  • very short nonfiction
  • English/Italian and Italian/English translations
  • art images and photographs

In the words of Kevin McIlvoy: We do not accept perfect work. We are looking for material that transcends its flaws.

Send all submissions to

  • For attachments, any commonly-used file format will do.
  • For snapshot submissions, please keep the image width at 480 pixels.

Note: You will only be notified if you submission is accepted.

About the Name

Di mezzo il mare comes from the Italian aphorism Fra il dire e il fare c’e di mezzo il mare, which means literally something to the effect of an ocean lies between what is said and what is done.

To explain this with algebra,
Let ‘handwritten journal snapshots’ = what is said
Let ‘publication’ = what is done

Di Mezzo Il Mare publishes handwritten journal snapshots.
